This course covers: Fully Regulated and Excepted Lithium Batteries for ground, air and ocean transport. Small, Medium and Large batteries will be covered.

  • Small lithium batteries – excepted from most of the transport regulations, by all modes, if properly packaged. In most cases marking will be required. For air transport, if a package containing small lithium batteries exceeds certain limits, it will become a fully regulated, Class 9 shipment.
  • Medium lithium batteries - domestic shipments by highway and rail are excepted from most of the transport regulations, if properly packaged and marked.
In some cases additional marking will be required. Medium batteries shipped by air or ocean are fully regulated as Class 9 materials and must meet all of the regulatory requirements.
  • Large lithium batteries – fully regulated as Class 9 materials by all modes of transportation.

Please note the terms “small”, “medium” and “large” are not used in the regulations. 49CFR contains “Exceptions for smaller cells and batteries” which include those we are categorizing as small and medium. These terms will be used as we go through the program.

Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  • Apply the dangerous goods and hazardous materials regulations correctly.
  • Describe some of the legal aspects of shipping hazardous materials.
  • Explain the relationship between Title 49, Code of Federal Regulations (49 CFR), IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations, the IMDG Code.
  • Understand shipper and operator responsibilities.

  • Select a proper shipping name.
  • Safely package lithium batteries
  • Correctly apply any marks and/or labels to each package of excepted lithium batteries
  • Correctly complete any required documentation for excepted lithium batteries
  • Understand UN specification packaging marks and the importance of using the packagings properly for fully regulated lithium batteries
  • Properly mark and label packages of fully regulated lithium batteries

Classroom training may be more suited for you: if you do not use the 49CFR Regulations on a regular basis.

What is the difference between webinar and online training? Webinars are instructor led and completed in 1 day. Online training is taken on your own, and you have 3 months to complete.

Are any additional training courses required?

  • Hazmat Security Awareness Training (SAT) - In the United States this additional training is required. DGI offers free SAT on our website.
  • Function Specific Training - Ultimately (in the United States) your employer has final responsibility for determining if a hazmat employee is properly trained for their particular job function. Since there is a potential for limitless types of job functions as determined by an individual employer, we as your training provider can only suggest what types of additional training might be required.
