Why do I need Security Awareness Training?
Effective March 25, 2003, shippers and carriers of certain highly hazardous materials must develop and implement security plans. In addition, all shippers and carriers of hazardous materials must ensure that their employee training includes a security component.
172.704(a)(4) Security awareness training. No later than the date of the first scheduled recurrent training after March 25, 2003, and in no case later than March 24, 2006, each hazmat employee must receive training that provides an awareness of security risks associated with hazardous materials transportation and methods designed to enhance transportation security. New hazmat employees must receive security awareness training within 90 days after employment.
Why are hazardous materials considered a threat?
The definition in 49 CFR states that a Hazardous Material means a substance or material that the Secretary of Transportation has determined is capable of posing an unreasonable risk to health, safety, and property when transported in commerce. Some items like tankers full of gasoline are obvious, while smaller amounts of certain chemicals could be just as deadly in the wrong hands.
How can we make the transportation of hazardous materials more secure?
This awareness program is one way. A joint effort between government, employer and you, the employee, can make a huge difference. Security threats don’t always come from outside sources, it could be Joe in accounting, or Sue from personnel. Threats against your company must be taken seriously. Tunnels, bridges, dams, storage facilities and waterways are all targets. Truckers must be aware that they should always check their surroundings and never leave the truck open to the general public. These are just a few ideas. You'll probably have a lot more after completing the Security Awareness program.
Please Note: You must print your certicate upon completion of the course. DGI does not issue certificates for Security Awareness Training. If you fail to print your certificate, you will have to retake the course and retest.Fill out my online form.
