Who should take this course? Companies who need to meet the General Awareness, Safety and Function Specific Training requirements of the DOT (ground) and IATA (air) and ONLY ship items classified as a "Consumer Commodity" either under DOT rules (ORM-D) or IATA/ICAO (Class 9):
- Warehouse workers who package shipments and mark and label boxes
- Shipping personnel who complete and sign the shipping papers
- Truck drivers who only handle consumer commodities
- Management personnel responsible for classifying hazardous products
- Anyone else who meets the definition of a "hazmat employee" and who needs training ONLY because they are shipping consumer commodities.
This course may be taken by those needing Initial or Recurrent training.
This course includes: This course covers the following commodities being shipped under IATA and DOT Regulations.
DOT Consumer Commodities - Items packaged in a form intended or suitable for retail sale to consumers for the purposes of personal care or household use.
- Aerosols (generally not larger than 17 oz)
- Flammable Liquids not larger than 1 gallon per bottle/can
- Corrosives, generally not larger than one quart
- Finished packages of the above substances not more than 30 kg (66 lbs)
- There are some exceptions and some additional products such as Toxic and Flammable Solids, if you have questions as to whether or not it qualifies, call us.
IATA (Air) Consumer Commodities - Items packaged in a form intended or suitable for retail sale to consumers for the purposes of personal care or household use.
- Aerosols (generally not larger than 17 oz)
- Flammable Liquids not larger than one pint per bottle/can
- Finished packages of the above substances not more than 30 kg (66 lbs)
- There are some exceptions, if your product is larger than this or if you have questions as to whether or not it qualifies, call us.
Materials Required: When beginning the course follow onscreen prompts to download and print the student workbook.
Are any additional training courses required?
- Function Specific Training - If you ship any product other than consumer commodities you will need additional training. Ultimately (in the United States) your employer has final responsibility for determining if a hazmat employee is properly trained for their particular job function. Since there is a potential for limitless types of job functions as determined by an individual employer, we as your training provider can only suggest what types of additional training might be required.

Training Valid For:
3 years for 49CFR; 24 months for IATA
Time Required:
2 to 4 hours for initial training or recurrent training for someone who has not regularly used the 49CFR and IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations; 2 hours for those who regularly use the 49CFR and IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations.
