Compliance Alert: AI Is Not a Substitute for Dangerous Goods Training!
Posted by Jessica Pounds on 30th Sep 2026
Dear DGI Training Clients,
As AI tools become ever more present and popular in our day-to-day life, it is urgent to remain aware that as valuable as a tool that AI can be, it should never be relied upon for shipping dangerous goods, or as a replacement for training. AI-generated information may be outdated, incomplete, incorrect, or fail to account for the specific material, quantity, packaging, mode of transportation, origin/destination, and State or Operator variations that apply to a shipment.
Dangerous Goods Training is Required by Law! Review training requirements here: https://dgitraining.com/training-law/ Additionally recurrent Training is required every 2-3 years after initial training, depending on mode of transportation. Training should be appropriate to an employee's actual job functions and responsibilities, with assessment used to demonstrate that personnel are competent to perform those functions safely. It is ultimately the responsibility of the employer to certify training.
Depending on the employee's job responsibilities, Training is required by law for personnel who:
- Prepare or process dangerous goods shipments
- Pack, mark, label, or document shipments
- Accept dangerous goods for air transportation
- Handle or load dangerous goods
- Supervise employees performing dangerous goods functions
We at DGI are increasingly concerned about businesses using AI to search for the cheapest, fastest, or easiest way around dangerous goods training requirements. The safety of the public is at risk when corners are cut when it comes to dangerous goods training. The consequences can include rejected shipments, delays, fines, or enforcement actions—and, more importantly, unsafe or undeclared dangerous goods entering the transportation system.
The Rules are Simple:
NEVER rely on AI-generated information to complete a shipment of Dangerous Goods or replace training. It should only be used as a tool for research.
TRAIN employees according to their dangerous goods functions and responsibilities.
DOCUMENT required training and competency assessments.
VERIFY against the current regulations: 49CFR, ICAO, IATA DGR, IMDG.
ASK AN EXPERT when the regulatory answer is unclear. Contact DGI. We offer free technical assistance for your shipments when you train with us with. DGI Answers – submit your questions here: https://dgitraining.com/shipment-questions/
At DGI Training, our goal is not simply to help companies ship dangerous goods—it is to help them understand the regulations, remain compliant, and ship them safely. Do not let an AI shortcut become a dangerous goods violation.
Remember AI is a tool; training is a requirement. Compliance is your responsibility.
Keep your shipments moving safely and on time with DGI Training!
We look forward to seeing you in class soon!\
