  • Product Description

Who should take this course? Individuals who are involved in shipping only excepted lithium batteries by highway, air and ocean transport. This course may be taken by those needing Initial or Recurrent training. This class is for shippers who only ship excepted Lithium Batteries.

This course covers: Excepted Lithium Batteries identified as “small” cells and batteries. Small lithium batteries will be covered for ground, air and ocean transport. “Medium” cells and batteries will be covered for highway only.

    • Small lithium batteries – excepted from most of the transport regulations, by all modes, if properly packaged. In most cases marking will be required. For air transport, if a package containing small lithium batteries exceeds certain limits, it will become a fully regulated, Class 9 shipment.
    • Medium lithium batteries - domestic shipments by highway and rail are excepted from most of the transport regulations, if properly packaged and marked.
In some cases additional marking will be required. Medium batteries shipped by air or ocean are fully regulated as Class 9 materials and must meet all of the regulatory requirements. The Fully Regulated Lithium battery course will be required.
    • Large lithium batteries – fully regulated as Class 9 materials by all modes of transportation. You will be required to take the Fully Regulated Lithium Battery course if you ship Large Lithium Batteries.

Please note the terms “small”, “medium” and “large” are not used in the regulations. 49CFR contains “Exceptions for smaller cells and batteries” which include those we are categorizing as small and medium. These terms will be used as we go through the program.

Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:

    • Apply the dangerous goods and hazardous materials regulations correctly.
    • Describe some of the legal aspects of shipping hazardous materials.
    • Explain the relationship between Title 49, Code of Federal Regulations (49CFR), IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations, the IMDG Code.
    • Understand shipper and operator responsibilities.
    • Identify the nine hazard classes.
    • Select a proper shipping name.
    • Safely package lithium batteries
    • Correctly apply any marks and/or labels to each package of excepted lithium batteries
    • Correctly complete any required documentation for excepted lithium batteries

    Materials Required:
Student workbook is accessible from within the online program.

What is the difference between online and webinar training? Webinars are instructor led and completed in 1 day. Online training is taken on your own, and you have 3 months to complete. Check out our webinars!

Are any additional training courses required?

    • Function Specific Training - If you ship any product other than excepted lithium batteries you will need additional training. Ultimately (in the United States) your employer has final responsibility for determining if a hazmat employee is properly trained for their particular job function. Since there is a potential for limitless types of job functions as determined by an individual employer, we as your training provider can only suggest what types of additional training might be required.
